D'Angelo Accused of Trying to Solicit a Police Officer

D'Angelo has been arrested in New York after allegedly being caught offering prostitute money for sex – unfortunately the lady in question was an undercover police officer.

Officials say the 36-year-old singer - real name Michael Archer - was arrested at the weekend while at the wheel of his Range Rover after trying to offer $40 (£27.50).

In a statement, the singer said he had pleaded not guilty and would fight the charge. D'Angelo had huge success with his debut album Brown Sugar in 1995 and its follow-up, Voodoo, in 2000. The statement continues: "(D'Angelo will) allow the American justice system to resolve the matter before jumping to any conclusions".

It is not the first time the singer has had a run-in with the law - he was given a three-year suspended sentence in January 2005 for cocaine possession.

Later that same year, he was also found guilty of marijuana possession and driving under the influence of alcohol, charges that led to his driving licence being suspended for 18 months.

The star is expected to release an album later this year.
