August 29: Michael Jackson Birthday
Sunday August 29th would have been Michael Jackson’s 52nd birthday.
Thousands of Michael Jackson fans gathered across the world to remember the man who was arguably the greatest artist of all time.
MJ fans gathered outside the childhood home (in Gary, Indiana) of the star who died on June 25, 2009.
The singer was honoured with a special This Is It birthday party on Saturday August 28 where Gary Mayor Rudy Clay addressed the crowd. He said: "The passing of our favorite son, Michael Jackson, is still fresh in our hearts. A year later, on the day before his birthday, we honor his memory as a great and giving person and as the world's greatest entertainer."
Filmmaker Spike Lee - who directed two of the singer's music videos in 1996 - also led tributes to Michael, hosting his second annual free party in the park at Brooklyn’s Prospect Park in memorial of his superstar friend.
Curators at LA museum The Autry Center also held a special Michael Jackson Day celebration, during which fans learned to perform the hitmaker's signature and famous dance moves such as the Moonwalk.
