Faith Evans - Something About Faith
With the current chart dominance of dance/pop enthused music, R&B singers tend not to make R&B anymore, but Faith Evans has stayed true to her rhythm and blues roots with her new album, Something About Faith.
The 37 year old first started out in 1994 and since then she has enjoyed platinum albums, a film debut, and has released a critically acclaimed auto-biography.
Notably recognised as the former wife of deceased Hip Hop legend, the Notorious B.I.G, Evans has remained constant with her sweet airy vocals; evidently displayed with her new release, which is laced with sweet melodies.
Her sixth studio album explores themes of faith, love, relationships, and has features from Snoop Dogg, Redman, Keyshia Cole, Raekwon, Kelly Price, Lil Mo’ and the UK’s very own, Estelle.
On the intro, the singer immediately welcomes you with her soothing vocals and it’s a beautiful start to the 17 track album.
I also particularly enjoyed listening to these songs - ‘I Still’, ‘Way You Move’ featuring Snoop Dogg, ‘Worth It’ and ‘Gone Already’.
‘Troubled World Part 2’ featuring Lil’ Mo and Estelle is also a notable track, as the three vocalists complemented each other well on this thought provoking song.
There aren’t many up-tempo songs on Something About Faith, its mostly slow ballads, so I was disappointed that her up-tempo efforts such as ‘Party’ featuring Redman failed to impress me.
My favourite song is ‘Baby Lay’ which I constantly had on repeat, it’s a breath of fresh sugary melodic air to the album and I’m really impressed with this serene track.
Faith Evans offers up a nice R&B album, however sometimes nice isn’t enough, and you want that little bit more than just nice - this is the case with Something About Faith. On my seventh listen to the whole album I can't help but conclude that though it makes an enjoyable listen, however overall it is slightly mundane.
Far from a classic album but definitely worth a mention, Something About Faith is out now.
